Dizziness after a car accident often outlasts everyone’s expectations, and weeks later plenty of people are still dizzy, still foggy, and still being told that everything looks fine because the ER visit, the CT, or the MRI came back normal.
We hear a version of this story in our office almost every week, and for most people the hardest part isn’t the dizziness itself, it’s not having an explanation for it. The research on post-accident dizziness actually explains quite a bit, and very little of it supports the idea that you should simply be over it by now.
Why dizziness can show up after a crash

A normal CT or MRI doesn’t always mean normal function because imaging is built to find structural problems, like bleeding, swelling, or a fracture. It is not built to measure how well your eyes, inner ear, neck, and brain are coordinating with each other in real time, and that coordination is what actually produces your sense of balance. The scan and the symptom are answering two different questions.
This is the part patients hear most often, and it’s worth saying clearly: a normal CT or MRI is genuinely good news. It means there’s no major structural injury that needs emergency treatment, and that’s something to feel relieved about.
